Wawa has 5,000 new jobs to fill this spring

WASHINGTON — Popular convenience and gas store chain Wawa has launched its annual spring hiring campaign and says it’s goal is to hire up to 5,000 new employees during the next three months.

The new hires are spread across Wawa’s 790 stores in six states, but Wawa has a big Washington-Baltimore presence, and its local footprint is growing.

The new openings include everything from customer service to management-level jobs.

Wawa says every store will have some job opportunities, and some will host open houses it calls “Wawa Career Wednesdays,” which include open houses on four straight Wednesdays from March 28 through April 18.

Wawa is known in the industry for its generous benefits and employee ownership program. Full- and part-time employees receive health benefits, flexible schedules and tuition reimbursement opportunities, and join its employee stock ownership plan.

Wawa is 41 percent owned by its employees through the ESOP, and nearly half of the ESOP is owned by store-level associates and store management.

Wawa’s ESOP, with more than 11,000 participants, is one of the 10 largest ESOPs in the country.

Wawa opened its first-ever District store on 19th Street Northwest, south of Dupont Circle, in December; another is coming to Georgetown.
