WASHINGTON — After rallying past 26000 for the first time ever in Tuesday trading only to fall sharply in afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 26000 for the first time in history Wednesday.

It took 13 days for the Dow to move from 25000 to 26000, compared to just more than a month it took to go from 24000 to 25000.
