WASHINGTON — German discount grocery Aldi opens its newest Washington-area store in Ashburn, Virginia on Nov. 9.
The store is at 43150 Broadlands Center Plaza in Ashburn.
Aldi has about 30 stores in the Washington region now, and is investing $30 million in remodeling its existing stores, as part of a nationwide, $3.4 billion investment plan to expand to 2,500 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2022.
Aldi currently has 1,600 stores in 35 states.
It expects to complete its remodeling program in the Washington area by 2018
Aldi is investing to protect its discount grocery flank with the arrival of rival German discount grocer Lidl.
Lidl established its North American headquarters in Crystal City in 2015 as a base for its U.S. expansion, and has distribution centers in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and Cecil County, Maryland.
Lidl’s U.S. plans include 100 stores across the East Coast in its first wave of openings, including several in the Washington area.
Lidl opened its first Washington area store in August in Manassas.
