Best summer internships? How about $8,000 a month

WASHINGTON — Glassdoor’s list of this year’s 25 Highest Paying Internships shows some companies pay big for short-term programs.

At No. 1 on this year’s list is Facebook, where the median monthly pay is $8,000. Perks on top of that for Facebook interns include free food, transportation and shared housing with a private bedroom and bathroom. Facebook also offers completely free weekend intern events.

But Facebook interns, and those at other high-paying companies, are working for that pay.

Glassdoor said coffee runs and note taking are no longer what an intern can expect. Those selected to intern at companies on the list are responsible for high-level engineering, engaging marketing projects and  question-and-answer sessions with executives.

For Washington-area intern hunters, there are a couple of companies on the highest-paying list this year.

McLean, Virginia-based Capital One Financial’s paid internship programs run from June through early August at locations throughout the country, with a median monthly pay of $5,000. Interns get involved in critical business decisions.

Accenture, whose Accenture Federal Services division is based in the Washington area, has a median monthly internship program pay of $4,960. Responsibilities include research, data analysis, software testing and writing reports.
