WASHINGTON — “Pet friendly” is now a top demand for condo buyers in the District, and if you’re looking for a dog-free condo building, your choices are increasingly limited.
“Over 90 percent of today’s buyers want to be in a pet-friendly building, whether they currently have a pet, or they want the option,” Valerie Grange, with McWilliams Ballard, told WTOP. “It is just huge on the top of the list of building features.”
It has become more than just pet-friendly policies. New condo developers in DC are incorporating a dog’s life into the building’s amenities.
“What we’re seeing are more than just dog- or pet-friendly communities. We are seeing dog amenities such as obstacle courses on rooftop decks, dog washing stations and doggy concierge services,” Grange said.
Grange says not only has there been a significant increase in the number of condos — and new apartment buildings — in the District with pet-friendly policies, but fewer of those buildings are tempering those policies with limits on size or breed of animal.
Also fewer and far between are bans on dogs in public spaces, such as courtyards and roof decks.
Not everybody likes dogs, and for potential buyers looking for buildings where pets aren’t allowed, the choices are getting harder to find. Grange says most of the buildings that still don’t allow pets are much older ones.
