Montgomery County wants a Silver Spring arena

WASHINGTON — Montgomery County would like a little more “downtown” in downtown Silver Spring, and is requesting proposals for a possible arena development near the Metro.

The county has released a Request for Development Proposals for a mixed-use development that would include a 5,000-square-foot multipurpose indoor sports, public assembly and entertainment facility. The county-owned property would also include adjacent retail and high-rise residential.

“We have long known that our community is in need of a multipurpose facility to house events such as high school, collegiate, and professional sporting events, graduations, and children’s shows and concerts,” said County Executive Ike Leggett.

“This site is ideal for this type of use as well as retail and high-rise residential structures,” he said.

The 2.8-acre site being offered for development is at 1100 and 1101 Bonifant Dr., the current location of two parking garages and a connecting bridge. The property sits next to the multimodal Silver Spring Transit Center.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is leading the effort to identify viable proposals and qualified developers.

Developer proposals are due by April 10, 2017. There is no timetable for the arena project’s development.

The Request for Development Proposals is posted on the Montgomery County website.
