Makeover coming to Mall at Prince Georges

WASHINGTON — The Mall at Prince Georges, at the Prince George’s Plaza Metro in Hyattsville, Maryland, expects to have a new look and a new tenant lineup in time for next year’s holiday shopping season, and continues to sign up retailers.

ULTA Beauty has signed a lease for 11,000 square feet at the mall. Designer Shoe Warehouse has signed a lease for 16,000 square feet. Both are scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2018.

Those leases follow a lease earlier this year for apparel retailer H & M, which opens next month in a 20,000-square-foot space.

Mall owner Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust is starting a $30 million remerchandising and renovation at Mall of Prince Georges, including new exteriors and entrances and a redesigned interior. Most renovations will begin early next year and are expected to be completed in advance of the 2017 holiday season.

“The property has just begun its transformation into an elevated, vibrant shopping and dining destination commensurate with the development that has occurred in the surrounding area which creates a significant opportunity to density the property in the future, enhancing the experience between the mall and surrounding developments,” said PREIT chief executive Joseph Coradino.

The entire renovation won’t be complete until 2018, but when it is, the company says 73 percent of nonanchor space will include new storefronts. It expects to continue adding new retail and restaurant tenants as well.

The Mall at Prince Georges opened in 1959. It was last renovated in 2001, when Target joined as an anchor and interior renovations were made.
