Unemployment down in Maryland, up in Virginia

WASHINGTON — Virginia’s unemployment edged up in September, as did the unemployment rate in the District, but Maryland’s jobless rate inched down last month.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday the unemployment rate in Virginia in September was 4.0 percent, up from 3.9 percent in August, but below Virginia’s September 2015 unemployment rate of 4.2 percent.

The District’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent last month, up from 6.0 percent in August. A year earlier, D.C.’s unemployment rate was 6.7 percent.

Maryland’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent last month, from 4.3 percent in August, and below its September 2015 unemployment rate of 5.1 percent.

All unemployment rates are reported as seasonally adjusted.

New Hampshire and South Dakota tied for the lowest state unemployment rate in September, at 2.9 percent. Alaska had the highest state unemployment rate last month, at 6.9 percent.
