Find an emoji, get a free pizza

WASHINGTON — If you find a bottle of Pepsi with a pizza emoji on it, it’s worth a free pizza at Pizza Hut.

From June 1 to Aug. 31, customers who bring a Pepsi bottle with either a pizza slice emoji or a whole pizza emoji on it will get a free one-topping personal pan pizza for carryout.

Neither Pepsi or Pizza Hut say what the odds of winning are, but a spokesman for Yum Brands Inc., Pizza Hut’s parent company, tells WTOP the cola company will distribute more than 5 million Pepsi bottles with one of the two emojis on them throughout the U.S.

The promotion is part of Pepsi’s larger “Say it with Pepsi” summer campaign, for which Pepsi created more than 200 “PepsiMoji” designs that are printed on its soda bottles.

Emojis were born on a purely digital platform (made mainstream by Apple’s iPhone), and Pizza Hut gets plenty of business from the internet.

It says nearly 50 percent of its orders now come through digital channels, including more than 30 percent via mobile devices.

The first Pizza Hut opened in Wichita, Kansas, in 1958, after two brothers borrowed $600 from their mom. There are 15,600 Pizza Hut locations in 97 countries now.
