D.C. region’s population surpasses Philadelphia

WASHINGTON — The D.C. metro area is now the sixth-largest metro in the nation, surpassing Philadelphia, according to 2015 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Census says the D.C. region’s population reached 6,097,684 in 2015, about 44,000 more residents than Philadelphia.

The D.C. metro area grew by 64,000 residents between 2014 and 2015.

The New York City metro area, the nation’s largest metro area, grew by 87,000 people to 20,182,305.

The Los Angeles metro area grew by 86,000 residents to 13,340,068.

No. 3 Chicago’s population shrank by about 6,200 last year to 9,551,031, but on a percentage basis, the decline was negligible.

The population in No. 4 Dallas grew by nearly 145,000 in 2015, to 7,102,796.  The population in No. 5 Houston grew by 159,000 to 6,656,947.

Census says Texas led the nation in growth last year. The Lone Star State added more 490,000 to its population between 2014 and 2015.
