What’s a penny buy? J.C. Penney says come see

WASHINGTON — A penny will actually buy you something at J.C. Penney Co.

The Plano, Texas-based retailer rolls out a promotion this weekend called “Get Your Penney’s Worth” at stores and online, to boost sales of its private brands.

In most cases, the promotions will feature apparel brands and offer “buy one, get a second one for a penny” offers, though J.C. Penney says upcoming Penney Days will feature in-store items for one cent with no additional purchase required, as long as supplies last.

J.C. Penney, now reversing declining sales, considers one of its key demographics to be mothers.

“We want to be the shopping mecca for the modern American mom,” said Mary Beth West, J.C. Penney’s chief marketing officer.

“We know our customers live very busy lives and we want every trip and interaction at J.C. Penney to be worth her time, her hard earned money and her effort.”

The penny promotions are scheduled throughout 2016, J.C. Penney says.

J.C. Penney cut its annual losses by 29 percent last year, and saw comparable store sales rise 4.5 percent. Boosting sales of its own private brands and improving online sales has been one of the retailers priorities, according to Bloomberg News.
