Citing ‘media frenzy,’ lawyers seek to have Freddie Gray case moved

WASHINGTON — Defense attorneys for the six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray are making a push to have the case moved out of the city.

In a new court document obtained by The Baltimore Sun, the attorneys argue finding an unbiased jury will be impossible. They claim publicity surrounding the case “has not subsided and shows no sign of stopping.”

The lawyers also use the words “media frenzy” describing coverage of the story, and they pointed to local newspapers and TV stations that show the officers’ mugshots on a regular basis.

The court document was filed Monday.

Prosecutors have said it is too early to determine whether it is necessary to move the case out of Baltimore.

Gray, 25, died in April after suffering a severe neck injury while he was in police custody.  The incident sparked demonstrations, riots and looting.

The six officers charged in the case are scheduled to go on trial in October.
