Man returned to Arlington Co. to face 1999 murder charge

WASHINGTON — A man charged with strangling a woman to death and leaving her body in the trunk of a car in 1999 has been returned to Arlington County where he will face charges in the 17-year-old case.

Ludvin Estrada, 46, was extradited from Guatemala to the United States. He arrived in Virginia on Friday and was being held in the Arlington County jail.

Estrada is charged with murder for the slaying of Eva Veliz, who was 27 when she was killed.

The night before her death, Veliz had gone out dancing with Estrada and the two were seen leaving together in the early morning hours of May 11, 1999. The two argued and Estrada strangled Veliz, killing her, according to police.

Veliz’s remains were found later that day.

Estrada fled to Guatemala, where he has remained since Veliz’s death. Although a warrant was issued for his arrest in 1999, Estrada was not taken into custody until April, police said.

Arlington police said that both the State and Justice departments, plus the U.S. Marshals Service and police in Guatemala were involved in returning Estrada to Virginia.
