WASHINGTON — It’s turning out to be a banner week for the national bird.
One day after those green-clad fellas from Philly raised the Lombardi Trophy, a pair of D.C. eagles are expecting to raise a new addition in their nest, located about 100 feet over the D.C. police training academy in Southwest.
Liberty the eagle is expected to lay as many as three eggs at any moment. (She’s been seen mating with her nestmate, Justice, several times since December, according to the Earth Conservation Corps.)
Liberty and Justice have had at least one egg a year since 2004. Last year, a new eaglet named Spirit hatched. In 2016, two eggs were laid. Both hatched; the pair were named Mary and Jimbo.
And like betting on a big football game, the Earth Conservation Corps wants to make this eaglet waiting game a little more interesting: Whoever can guess the closest date and time to when Liberty will lay her first egg will win a “Coffee & Eagles” coffee mug.
