WASHINGTON — A Prince George’s County police officer who has been accused of sexual assault has been suspended amid an investigation, police said.

Police responded to a dispute between a man and a woman on Friday around 5 a.m. The woman asked for transport from the area, and the on-scene supervisor and the officer agreed.

Prince George’s County police Chief Hank Stawinski said in a news conference that the officer took the woman to the New Carrollton Metro Station, parking in an area that is under video surveillance.

The woman said that the officer touched her inappropriately inside the cruiser, and she contacted Metro Transit Police. Metro police started an investigation and informed Prince George’s County police.

Stawinski said that Metro has full access to the cruiser, and the officer — who has been with the department for 26 years — is fully cooperating.

Prince George’s County police and Metro Transit Police are conducting separate investigations.

Metro is reviewing surveillance video, and asks anyone with information to call 301-955-5000.

The officer is suspended pending the investigation’s outcome.

Below is the area where it happened.
