WASHINGTON — Three people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and possible burns after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment building in Alexandria.

Battalion Chief Christopher Kunkle with Alexandria Fire and EMS said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

A firefighter was also hurt battling the blaze. The injury was described as a minor arm injury and the firefighter received treatment on the scene.

Three families were displaced by the fire and a spokesman for the National Capital Area Red Cross said the agency is assisting those residents.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire. On Twitter, the department said the call came in a little before 11 a.m.

It was put out shortly before 1:30 on Friday  afternoon, according to WTOP’s Mike Murillo.

The fire department said on Twitter that the fire started in an apartment and extended to the roof and that medics were on scene treating people.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this point.
