Returning soldier’s proposal enlists the help of fellow passengers

WASHINGTON – An American soldier returning from an overseas deployment came home in style, with a nice surprise for his girlfriend.

Army Sgt. Anthony Vance landed in Sacramento on Tuesday after six months in South Korea. Not surprisingly, his girlfriend, Misty Kennedy, was waiting for him, USA TODAY reports.

Before she got to see him, though, she waited through a procession of passengers down the airport escalator. She figured something was up when 22 of them had a single rose each for her. The last one came from Vance himself, who had arranged the other flowers, and he capped it off with a down-on-one-knee marriage proposal.

Kennedy pronounced herself “overwhelmed” to Sacramento’s KXTV, and said yes.

They’re not looking at along engagement: Vance, who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is headed back to South Korea, so they’re tying the knot Saturday.
