SOL school-by-school numbers: A wide range of results in Northern Virginia

WASHINGTON — A school-by-school breakdown of Virginia’s standardized test results shows some schools consistently at the top for pass rates in multiple subjects, and others with more variation.

The statewide data released earlier in the week show overall pass rates ticked up slightly in a few of the subject areas, but results varied in different parts of Northern Virginia.

Additional results show that at several schools, all students who took a test passed at advanced levels, including Loudoun County’s Buffalo Trail Elementary School and Prince William County’s Alvey and Sudley elementary schools on fifth-grade history tests.

In math courses, students who took classes that were advanced for their grade appear to have passed at advanced levels, based on the scores on tests beyond what an elementary or middle school would offer to on-grade level students.

The highest percentage of advanced scores on an end-of-course high school test was at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County. Ninety-six percent of students at the magnet school scored at the advanced level on the end-of-course writing exam.

On the end-of-course reading test, the highest percentage of students with advanced scores also was at Thomas Jefferson, but at just 48 percent, while 43 percent passed with advanced scores at the Kilmer Center, 41 percent at Langley and Oakton high schools, 34 percent at West Springfield High School and 22 percent at McLean High School.

All told, of the top 17 schools for percentage of advanced scores on the end of course high school reading test, 12 are in Fairfax County. The highest ratio of advanced scores in any other school in Northern Virginia was 16 percent, at Arlington’s Washington-Lee High School

Several alternative schools had few or no advanced scores: Prince William County’s Freedom High School (2 percent), Manassas Park High School (3 percent), and Osbourn High School in Manassas (3 percent) had among the lowest percentage of advanced scores on end-of-course reading tests.

Students who pass end-of-course tests get credits toward graduation that are required to earn the highest level of diploma from a Virginia high school.

Looking simply at the overall pass rates, a number of Northern Virginia schools scored 100 percent on SOLs in history and social sciences this year — nearly twice the pass rates of the region’s lowest-performing schools.
