Closing of coal ash ponds leaves residents worried about wells

WASHINGTON — Dominion Virginia Power has begun the process of releasing more than 200 million gallons of treated coal ash water into Quantico Creek from its power plant in Dumfries. And that’s left some residents afraid to drink their well water.

The plant began closing its coal ash ponds last week; the process could take a year.

Brian West lives 750 feet from one of those coal ash ponds at Dominion Virginia Power’s Possum Point Plant. He has well water, and tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he was not aware of any problems until local activists talked to him about the company’s plans to drain the ash ponds.
