Overturned tractor-trailer leaves cattle walking Va. highway

WASHINGTON — The driver of a livestock trailer that overturned on Interstate 81 during Monday’s snowstorm has been charged with reckless driving.

Derek Crabtree, 22, of Dante, Virginia, was driving the tractor trailer loaded with 33 cattle when it ran off the side of the interstate and overturned in the median about 5:30 a.m. Efforts to round up six cows that escaped the damaged trailer and the investigation closed a stretch of the interstate for much of the day, according to Virginia State Police.

As of 4 p.m., state troopers were still trying round up the last of the stray cattle and northbound traffic was being diverted around the crash investigation, near Interstate 66 in Frederick County.

Six cows did not survive the crash and veterinarians were assessing others that were injured — a process that continued well into the afternoon, state police said.

Crabtree was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
