No threat at Christopher Newport University after report of man with gun

WASHINGTON _  Reports of a person with gun on the campus of Christopher Newport University Wednesday in Newport News, Virginia prompted the university to cancel 8 a.m. classes.

The university tweeted that there is no threat, and classes would resume at 9 a.m.

  Earlier Wednesday morning, the university tweeted that the person was seen with a handgun.

The university also sent out this alert at 6:35 a.m.:

CNU Alert: We have received two reports of an unknown individual holding a handgun while walking across campus. The individual is described as a black male, 5 foot 8 inches wearing a tan jacket and a knit cap. Campus Police and Newport News Police have not been able to locate this person. All CNU students, faculty and staff should remain in their building until further notice.

All students, faculty and staff are being told to stay indoors until further notice.

There’s no indication that any gunshots have been fired.
