WASHINGTON — Volvo is responding to a popular video showing a demonstration of a Volvo XC60 and its alleged self-parking assist feature that went very wrong in the Dominican Republic.
In the video, the vehicle quickly picks up speed and slams into journalists documenting the demo.
According to the website, Remolacha, the men received minor bruising from the incident.
Fusion.net reached out to the automaker and spokesman Johan Larsson explained that the video is mislabeled and said that the car is not attempting to self-park.
“It seems they are trying to demonstrate pedestrian detection and auto-braking,” Larsson said in an email to Fusion.net. “Unfortunately, there were some issues in the way the test was conducted.”
Larsson says the people who purchased the vehicle in this demonstration did not pay for the “Pedestrian detection functionality,” which is a feature that costs extra.
