WASHINGTON – The northbound lanes of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway were closed Tuesday for more than four hours after a car hit a mower.
The lanes reopened to traffic about 8:30 p.m. The closure created heavy delays for afternoon commuters.
The man who was operating the mower was a contractor with the National Park Service. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, the parks service said.
The man had been mowing the median strip but investigators did not know whether he had left the median or if the car left the road.
All traffic was diverted off the parkway onto Riverdale Road.
