Gluten-free chicken nuggets recalled for Staph contamination

WASHINGTON — Murry’s Inc. has issued a 20,000-pound recall on 12-oz. boxes of Bell & Evans Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Nuggets with a “best by” date of March 25, 2016, the company announced Thursday.

NBC Washington is reporting that the nuggets are sold in multiple locations in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and are also sold in various other states across the country.

The nuggets have tested positive for Staphylococcus bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. No one has reported being sick.

The bacteria was found during a routine sample check by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Symptoms or Staph are often felt within six hours of consumption.

“We will conduct a full internal investigation in response to Colorado’s findings and take every action possible to prevent this problem from happening again,” said Murry’s Inc. President Ira Mendelson in a statement.

Keeping kitchen surfaces clean, thoroughly cooking food, and keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold can all help prevent Staph contamination.
