Former Md. teacher’s aide faces additional charges in federal child sex abuse case

WASHINGTON — The federal case against a former Prince George’s County teacher’s aide accused of child sex abuse is growing after federal prosecutors said they have learned of another victim.

A federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment Tuesday against Deonte Carraway, 23, that is now one count larger, as prosecutors have learned of the abuse of another child.

Prosecutors learned of an additional video sent to Carraway depicting a 13-year-old boy performing a sex act, court documents said. Along with more than 270 state charges, Carraway is now facing 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor for the purpose of producing child pornography. The two new charges are for the additional victim and the additional video.

Prosecutors say Carraway sexually abused students at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary School in Glenarden between August 2015 and February 2016 both on and off school property. Prosecutors say Carraway coerced 12 minors ranging in age from 9-13 years old to engage in sex acts with him and with each other.

Prosecutors say he videotaped those acts or had the children send him videos and photos of themselves.

A guardian of one of the victim’s discovered a nude photo shared to the victim’s phone and reported Carraway to the principal at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary and to Prince George’s County police.

Carraway faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years in prison.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 30.
