Oxon Hill man, 68, succumbs to injuries from home fire

WASHINGTON — Prince George’s County Firefighters and Medics  say a 68-year-old man died in a house fire in Maryland Friday.

Firefighters found Bernie Hayes suffering third-degree burns over the majority of his body at his Oxon Hill, Maryland home Friday afternoon.

They had responded to a call reporting smoke at the brick duplex in the 5200 block of Leverett Street. They  entered the home and extinguished a fire in the first floor living room. They found Hayes unresponsive in the immediate area of the fire.

He was taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center’s burn unit in critical condition, but died from his injuries late Friday evening.

Fire Investigators searched for the cause of the fire, but it seems to be accidental, causing $20,000 worth of damage. The home had working smoke alarms.

Firefighters returned to Leverett Street on Saturday morning to ask residents door-to-door about the status of their smoke alarms. They’ll help test alarms and replace faulty alarms for free.
