Man confesses to fatal, unprovoked stabbing outside Seabrook school

SEABROOK, Md. (AP) — A man has confessed to what police say was an unprovoked fatal stabbing near a basketball court outside an elementary school in Seabrook.

Prince George’s County police announced Tuesday that 31-year-old Alex Jones of Lanham was arrested and has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Douglas Reyes.

Police say a man’s body — later identified as Reyes — was found at the playground in the 6700 block of 97th Avenue in Seabrook at about 4:30 p.m. Monday. The body was found near Gaywood Elementary School and Gaywood Neighborhood Park.

Police say Jones and Reyes walked to the basketball court separately. Police say Reyes was sitting on a bench near the court when Jones confronted him and stabbed him several times in an unprovoked attack. Police say Reyes and Jones did not know each other.

An officer arrested Jones near the scene shortly after the stabbing.

Prince George’s County police say Jones confessed to the crime.

Jones is being held without bond. Online court records do not list an attorney for him.
