WASHINGTON — A pot bellied pig who suffered from life-threatening burns in a November house fire is headed home.

Pebbles was at home on Nov. 23 when a house fire destroyed his owners’ Upperville, Virginia home. The 30 pound pig, who was burned on 85 percent of his body, wasn’t expected to live. However, The Middleburg Humane Foundation stepped in to offer care. That care, in conjunction with community donations, saved him.

When firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire on Nov. 23 they wrapped Pebbles in a wet towel and administered oxygen. The humane society considers his recovery “miraculous.” In addition to his burns, veterinarians were concerned about the damage smoke could have done to his lungs. In a news release, the Middleburg Humane Foundation said pigs have thick hides which help them recover from burns better than other animals.

On Jan. 4 a party will be held at the Middleburg Humane Society to celebrate his recovery and reunite Pebbles with his family.

The party will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Hunters Head Tavern — 9048 John S. Mosby Highway, Upperville, Virginia, 20184.
