WASHINGTON — A couple who wed during the weekend in Hawaii was asked to move their ceremony so President Barack Obama could play golf during his vacation.

Bloomberg Politics reports that Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue Jr., who are both in the Army, were told they’d have to make changes to their Kaneohe Lipper Golf Course nuptials the day before the big event.

And, for some salt in the wound, the couple says they’d even invited the president to attend but received a letter that same day congratulating them but declining the invitation.

However, CBS News says a source familiar with the story points out that the White House wasn’t told about the wedding ceremony’s location and that a golf course manager told the couple to relocate. That manager hadn’t informed anyone else.

Upon learning of the incident, President Obama called the bride to offer his personal apologies and a congratulations.

Jamie McCarthy, sister of the groom, told Bloomberg that it was a “wonderful talk” and the call made the new couple’s day.

The bride’s sister posted a photo to Instagram of the couple at the altar talking to Obama on the phone:
