Pirates recall Cole to start Monday

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled right-handed pitcher Gerrit Cole from rookie-level Bristol to start Monday’s game against St. Louis.

Right-handed relief pitcher Stolmy Pimentel has returned from rehab with Double-A Altoona and has been activated from the 15-day disabled list.

Catcher Tony Sanchez was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Sanchez hit .235 with 17 doubles, 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 81 games this year with Indianapolis. Sanchez, a member of Pittsburgh’s opening day roster, has hit safely in six of his last seven games and in 17 of 21 games this year with the Pirates.

Sunday night, the club also optioned right-handed pitcher John Holdzkom to Indianapolis. To make room for Holdzkom on the 40-man roster, first baseman Chris McGuiness has been designated for assignment.
