Lufthansa pilots to stage 6-hour strike Friday

BERLIN (AP) — A union representing pilots at Lufthansa says they will stage a six-hour strike Friday, targeting short- and medium-haul flights from Frankfurt.

The Vereinigung Cockpit union said Thursday the strike will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. (1500 to 2100 GMT; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT). It will involve pilots on Boeing 737, Airbus A320 and Embraer planes scheduled to depart Germany’s busiest airport, which is Lufthansa’s main hub.

The planned walkout follows a six-hour strike last week by pilots at Lufthansa’s Germanwings budget subsidiary.

One of the pilots’ main demands is that Lufthansa keep paying a transition payment for those who want to retire early. The airline wants to cut those payments.

The pilots are also asking for a salary increase of 10 percent.
