Va. National Guard brigade to see command change

BOWLING GREEN, Va. (AP) — A Staunton (STAN’-tuhn) infantry brigade with the Virginia National Guard is marking a change of command.

The change of command is scheduled Saturday for the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Fort A.P. Hill.

Col. William J. Coffin will take command of the brigade from Col. John M. Epperly. He has been the 116th’s commander since June 2012.

Coffin is a Malden, Massachusetts, native who lives in Staunton and works full-time for the Virginia National Guard. Epperly is a Fredericksburg resident. He will become the guard’s operations and training officer.

The 11th is also known as the “Stonewall Brigade.” Authorized at 3,400 soldiers, it is the largest major command in the Virginia National Guard.
