DC detective shot, wounded in carjacking attempt

WASHINGTON (AP) — Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier says an off-duty detective is in stable condition after he was shot in a carjacking attempt.

Lanier told reporters the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Wednesday near Pennsylvania Avenue and Southern Avenue in Southeast Washington, near the border with Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Lanier said occupants of a burgundy Nissan Altima tried to carjack an off-duty detective. The detective attempted to flee but was pursued and shot multiple times.

The officer was taken to a hospital by helicopter. Lanier said the detective was out of surgery and in stable condition.

Lanier said one occupant of the Altima was arrested. Police identified him as 27-year-old Romeo Hayes of Washington and said he is charged with assault with intent to kill.
