WASHINGTON — If you’re looking to save a few bucks, consider looking a little closer at your car insurance policies. You may qualify for more discounts than you think.
The personal finance website Bankrate compiled a list of car insurance discounts offered by the 10 largest auto insurers. Almost every insurer offers popular discounts, bundling car insurance with other policies, a safe driving record and, for younger drivers, good grades.
There are more recent and less-known discounts too, like those for having daytime running lights or newer vehicles, as well as affinity or occupational discounts, rewarding those who affiliate with certain groups such as professional associations or fraternities and sororities.
“It’s important to not only look for discounts, but also to look for the best service for lowest price,” said Bankrate insurance analyst Doug Whiteman.
“Consumers can look for deals by doing things like comparing at least three companies, read online reviews and financial strengths of the companies.”
Which insurer offers the most of the 19 popular discounts Bankrate analyzed? Farmers Insurance Group offers 17.
Whiteman stressed the importance of taking the initiative to ask insurers of more obscure discounts.
