Candidates set for special election

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Two candidates are set to square off in an Aug. 19 special election for a House of Delegates seat to replace retiring Democratic Del. Robert H. Brink.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1qEAVrV) that Republicans in Northern Virginia have nominated Dave Foster to run for the 48th District, which includes parts of Arlington and Fairfax counties.

Democrats have nominated Richard “Rip” Sullivan, a partner at the law firm of Reed Smith and an adjunct professor at the George Mason University School of Law.

Foster is the former president of the Virginia Board of Education. He lost the 2009 GOP nomination contest for attorney general to Ken Cuccinelli.

Brink recently accepted a position in the McAuliffe administration as deputy commissioner for aging services at the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services.
