Police: County inmate with similar name released

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania woman is accused of taking advantage of county jail guards who apparently were confused by her similar-sounding name and released her to a bail bondsman looking for another inmate.

Fayette County Warden Brian Miller says 29-year-old Evelyn Grace Campbell of Uniontown is back in the county lockup and now faces an escape charge after Friday’s mix-up.

That’s when the bondman showed up to post $500 bail on behalf of another inmate, Maretta Ruth Gamble.

The warden believes Campbell stepped forward when guards called for Gamble — then escaped after telling the bail bondsman she didn’t have identification before he let her sign the release papers.

Miller says the guards and bail bondsman should have had photos of both women. The mix-up is being investigated by the jail.
