Georgia freshman Atkinson gives up football

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia freshman tight end Hunter Atkinson has decided he won’t pursue a football career.

In a statement on Wednesday, Georgia said Atkinson instead will focus “on opportunities associated with his long-term career goals.” Coach Mark Richt says he understands Atkinson’s decision.

Atkinson signed with Georgia this year after winning all-state honors at West Hall High School.
