BALTIMORE (AP) — Police commissioner Anthony Batts says the department is reviewing its policy on responding to calls at hospitals in the wake of a teen patient’s death days after he was stunned during a struggle with officers.
The department said Wednesday that during the review officers will respond to hospitals or mental health institutions when there is a violation of law or a threat to life, or a supervisor determines police should get involved.
Officers were called to MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital on May 7 when police say the teen taken to the hospital for treatment of emotional distress became combative with security and an officer used a stun gun. The teen was breathing when officers left and police say the department learned later that he fell into a coma and died.
