SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly received $607,200 in bonus and incentive pay during fiscal 2012 while leading the Fighting Irish to a berth in the national championship game, earning a total of $1.46 million in pay and other benefits.
That’s an increase over the $1.09 million he received the year before, but still considerably less than the $2.05 million the university paid to Charlie Weis, who was fired after the 2009 season and now coaches Kansas. The figures were included in Notre Dame’s most recent IRS documents for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, which were obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.
The document states that Kelly’s base pay was $698,140, up from the $672,608 listed in the document the year before. It doesn’t include details from the new five-year contract Kelly signed in August that he said at the time signified “we’re all together in this contract about moving the program forward.”
The $1.46 million likely wasn’t the total amount of money Kelly was paid, however. The document states that Kelly is allowed to receive pay from external sources with prior written approval from the university and isn’t part of the pay listed by the university.
For Weis, it was the third straight payment of $2,054,744 as part of a separation agreement after an initial payment of $6,638,403. He was fired with six years left on a 10-year contract signed midway through his first season on the job, meaning the school has paid him more than $12.8 million since he was fired. The IRS document states the payments will continue through December 2015.
Former defensive coordinator Bob Diaco, who was hired as head coach at Connecticut in December, earned $672,824, which included an $88,388 bonus.
According to the document, Kelly was the third highest paid person at the school that year. The highest was Scott Malpass, a university vice president and chief investment officer who oversees the school’s $6.44 billion endowment. Malpass receives a base salary of $870,480 and received $2.02 million in bonuses and incentives, earning a total of $4.25 million in compensation.
Michael D. Donovan, managing director for private capital investments, was second at $1.78 million.
Women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw had a higher base salary than Kelly at $722,232 and received $209,109 in bonuses and incentives, earning a total of $1.058 million. Men’s basketball coach Mike Brey earned $806,488, which included $75,364 in bonuses. McGraw also earned $272,500 and Brey $720,000 from the school’s Play by Play Sports, now known as Notre Dame Sports Properties, which includes radio and TV shows.
Athletic director Jack Swarbrick earned $1.14 million, which included $170,670 in bonuses. The Rev. John Jenkins, the university president, earned $830,119.
