ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Mother Nature was definitely smiling on the metro area Saturday. The weather could have not been more beautiful for Alexandria’s 20th annual “Earth Day” celebration held at Ben Brenman Park.

This year’s theme “Water: Every Drop Counts.”

Two-year old Conner Jones immersed himself in the experience as he played in one of the water exhibits. His grandmother Jane Ann Wright, here on a visit from West Virginia, enjoyed watching her grandson play.

Eric Sokolove and his six-year old son Charlie scored some environmental points by riding their bikes to the Earth Day celebration.

“They have exhibits to teach you about taking care of the earth,” Charlie says.

“He teaches me more and more every year,” Sokolove says of his son.

Area students put on a unique fashion show featuring creations made from recycled materials, says Jennifer Hovis, Chair of the Earth Day planning committee for Alexandria.

Students from Matthew Maury Elementary modeled their creations on the catwalk. They made their own version of truffula trees inspired by Dr. Seuss’ classic book “The Lorax.”

The kids painted recycled water bottles and then sculpted them with scissors, hairdryers and their own hands to create the truffula trees.

But this was a double celebration: Earth Day and Arbor Day.

The City of Alexandria has been recognized for 30 consecutive years as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Earth Day is actually on Monday but many celebrate over the weekend.
