Crime in Alexandria drops to 1960s levels

WASHINGTON – Crime has dropped to historically low levels in Alexandria, police say.

Homicide, rape, aggravated assault burglary, larceny and auto thefts dropped by more than 9 percent in 2012 from 3,612 incidents to 3,283.

There were no murders in Alexandria last year.

“We remain committed to keeping crime low and maintaining a safe and vibrant community,” Chief of Police Earl L. Cook says in a statement.

It’s the lowest crime rate for the city since 1966, officials say.
