Alvin Crawley steps down as superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools

WASHINGTON – Alvin L. Crawley will resign as the interim superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools, Maryland’s second largest school system, effective June 3.

The Board of Education accepted his resignation Thursday and issued this statement:

“We are saddened by Dr. Crawley’s decision to leave early; however, due to the passage of the recent legislation changing the governance structure of our school system, we fully understand. We regretfully accept Dr. Crawley’s resignation and express our gratitude and appreciation for his consistent dedication to student achievement.”

Crawley says he submitted his resignation with mixed emotions. “I have enjoyed my tenure as Interim Superintendent of Schools and appreciate the support of our Board, staff, parents, students, and members of the community. I am very proud of the accomplishments we have achieved during my tenure,” he said in a statement.

Crawley was hired to head the 123,000-student district last August. His contract was set to expire at the end of June.

His resignation comes just after the Maryland General Assembly passed a law that lets the county executive select the school system’s superintendent and name the chairman and vice chairman of the school board.

The next superintendent who will be picked by County Executive Rushern Baker won’t report to Baker, but instead will report to the school board.

Crawley replaced former superintendent William R. Hite, who now heads Philadelphia’s school system.
