WASHINGTON – Bensville Road (Route 229) has reopened near Carrie Court in Waldorf and evacuation order lifted after authorities removed an overturned propane tanker truck that closed the road for hours.

While the road has reopened, parents will still be required to pick up their children at the following Charles County public schools: William A. Diggs Elementary School, Theodore G. Davis Middle School and North Point High School in Waldorf, Md.

Homes in a half mile radius from the tanker were evacuated for several hours. They have since been allowed to return to their homes.

The truck, carrying 2,000 pounds of propane, turned over around 9:30 a.m.

School spokeswoman Katie O’Malley Simpson says parents can pick up their kids after school.

The school district has been posting updates on its website.
