Md. proposal would make bag tax statewide

WASHINGTON – Every time you wind through the checkout aisle, anywhere in Maryland, you could soon face a new fee.

A plan being introduced in the House of Delegates on Friday would impose a 5-cent charge for every paper or plastic bag shoppers take at stores.

Supporters claim the move would cut back on litter, but opponents raise concerns about unintended consequences — putting more pressure on household budgets that are already stretched thin, reports The Washington Post.

A similar fee has been in place in Montgomery County and Washington D.C. for several years.

If the proposal passes, Maryland would be the first in the country to pass a statewide charge on disposable bags.
