The deputy sheriff told police he arrived at his Fort Washington home to find the front door damaged. Once inside, he was confronted by 20-year-old Jon Adgrain of Indian Head, Md., officials say.

The deputy shot Adgrain, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers say the deputy had interrupted a burglary in progress. Detectives believe more suspects may have been on the scene.

Prince George’s County police would not say if Adgrain was armed. An investigation is ongoing.
