Norton vows to donate a day’s pay to furloughed workers

WASHINGTON – D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is prepared to show solidarity with government workers who might feel the pinch of sequestration.

Should the budget cuts go into place, she will donate a day’s pay for each day federal workers are furloughed this year.

“While they enjoy the protection of the Constitution, Congress is visiting pain on its own employees, the American public and the U.S. economy alike,” Norton said in a news release.

Norton will donate through the Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund, which gives no-interest loans and grants to federal employees in financial need.

“The $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts will have a devastating impact on the fragile economic recovery, government services and investments, and particularly federal employees, who have already been subject to a federal pay freeze for more than two years.”

The salaries of congressional leaders are exempt from sequestration, but their office budgets are not.
