Fairfax County searches for next superintendent

WASHINGTON – The Fairfax County School Board will hold a series of meetings this week in order to obtain the community’s input on its search for the next superintendent.

In December, the consultant group Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, hired by the board, developed a list of preferred characteristics for the new school system’s leader.

Some of the desired characteristics include a candidate that possesses visionary leadership, instructional and organizational excellence and meaningful communication and engagement.

A survey was also developed for parents. The purpose of the survey is to gather information on the characteristics they think are most common among effective superintendents.

The community meetings will take place on the following days:

  • Monday, Jan. 14 at the Centerville High School library at 4 p.m.
  • Monday, Jan. 14 at the Hayfield Secondary School cafeteria at 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the Gatehouse Administration Center (room 1600) at 10 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the South Lakes High School cafeteria at 7 p.m.

Final recommendations will be presented at the Fairfax County School Board’s next work session on Jan. 30.

The school system’s current leader, Jack Dale, will retire at the end of June. He took over as superintendent in July 2004.
