100 Montaditos Coming To Bethesda Row In May

The Spanish sandwich chain 100 Montaditos plans to open its store at 4922 Elm St. (in the former space of Green Papaya) in May, its first U.S. location outside of Florida.

The fast casual restaurant serves montaditos, the crunchy Spanish rolls baked to order, filled with ingredients such as Serrano ham, tortilla, chorizo sausage and Iberian cheese. As the name implies, there are 100 varieties of fillings available and the bread is partially baked in Spain before being frozen and delivered to more than 250 locations around the world.

“Bethesda is an area comprised of individuals who are cultured, seasoned travelers and enjoy diverse dining,” said restaurant spokesman Juan Gervas. “They may have been exposed to our brand during their travels to Spain or generally enjoy Spanish cuisine.”

The restaurant boasts a wealth of distinctly Spanish ingredients. Gervas said the ham is made exclusively from Iberian pigs bred in “restricted areas” of southwestern Spain and southeastern Portugal, where the meat is cured for up to 36 months.

100 Montaditos will offer traditional dishes such as patatas bravas (potatoes in a spicy red sauce) sangria, and a collection of Spanish beer and wine.

The tapas-sized sandwiches range in price from $1 to $3 and platters of cheeses and ham go for $9. Gervas said the restaurant is planning a $1 Mahour draft beer promotion on Wednesdays.
