WASHINGTON – Like people, allergies come in all shapes and sizes and can sometimes be hard to understand.
Getting itchy and red around the middle while wearing jeans could be caused by a reaction to the button.
Many blue jean buttons and rivets are made of nickel, which can cause some people to get itchy, red and blistery. It’s called nickel dermatitis.
The Mayo Clinic notes people of all ages can develop the allergy after repeated exposure. Before the invention of pantyhose, for example, many women experienced allergic reactions caused by garter belts, according to a Washing ton State report on safety and health.
Experts say a quick fix is just to cover the metal with nail polish or replace the buttons.
When it comes to mysterious allergic reactions, several things can set them off like newly applied paint, perfume and even potted plants.
