NYT: Iran agrees to talk with U.S. about nuclear program

WASHINGTON – The United States and Iran have agreed to discuss Iran’s nuclear program for the first time, The New York Times reported Saturday evening.

The newspaper reports Iranian officials say they want to wait until the presidential election is over before talking. Meanwhile, the White House says it is “not true” that U.S. and Iran officials have agreed to meet or talk.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor says President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever’s necessary to prevent that from happening. Vietor says the onus is on Iran to abandon its campaign or it will face more sanctions and increased pressure.
